It’s got to be tough being a gay cop. Try being a closeted gay cop whose longtime partner makes homophobic comments in a police department filled with hostility and discrimination. Add to that a dead life partner who drowned while they were boating and a murder that appears to be a hate crime against a gay man and, voila, you have Kendell Parker’s life.Parker is a complicated man. He’s drinking to cope and not really coping However, he doesn’t need to cope with his life to solve this case. He’s pulled by the fact that someone is attacking members of his community while at the same time determined to treat it as any other homicide. Michaelsen writes well and the subtleties are present and poignant but he doesn’t hit you over the head with them. It’s just been rereleased because the sequel is due out in the spring. I can’t wait for The Deadwood Murders.

“Truth be told, he died a little death at the beginning of every homicide investigation.”Amazingly, this is my first Jon Michaelsen book, and therefore my first Kendall Parker mystery. First published in 2013 and reissued in 2018, “Pretty Boy Dead” is a gripping thriller, and the literary debut of a character who, I suspect, I am going to grow fond of over time.Oddly enough, this is not really a mystery story, since the reader pretty much knows who the bad guys are from the start. Oh, there are several surprises along the way, but the punch this story packs is less about unravelling the mystery than it is about figuring out how Kendall Parker is going to get there. I got so caught up in this that I took a whole day to read the book cover to cover. Also, this is not a romance. Emotionally, this is a tough book to get through, because Kendall Parker is deeply closeted – more out of perceived necessity, we come to understand, than out of self-loathing. His world is profoundly imbued with homophobia, starting with his police partner and his boss. Honestly, it felt like the 1980s to me, rather than the 2010s. And not only is Parker closeted, he is grieving, something else that is revealed gradually as the book unfolds. The clues are there right away, but the author is frugal with his reveals, doling them out carefully to maximize their impact. The narrative builds up speed as the story unrolls, starting with a tense preamble, written from the dual perspectives of a murder victim and his killer. Then the author brings Parker onto the scene as if he were any detective in any murder mystery. Then we (and only we) begin to realize that Kendall Parker isn’t like other cops.Everything comes to a head for Parker – professionally and personally – in the last twenty percent of the novel. It doesn’t feel rushed, but you have to force yourself to read slowly and not skim ahead to see what happens. It’s the definition of a page-turner.The Kendall Parker series could have ended here. It is full of incident and interesting characters. It is a complicated, interwoven series of crimes that drag Parker into both emotional turmoil and life-threatening situations. The ending is solid, satisfying and, ultimately, the metaphorical emergence of a butterfly from its chrysalis. It is not an end at all, but a beginning.Book 2 in the series is due out later in 2019, and it’s already pre-ordered for my Kindle. There are a lot of people I want to meet again.

I do so love a good murder mystery and this book certainly filled the bill! The first in a series of Kendall Parker mysteries, it tells of a closeted gay detective who is assigned to the case of a male stripper/prostitute who is found beaten to death in a park. Kendall finds himself a little bit too involved in this case. He and his partner are put in danger at every turn. Who could be behind this murder and why?So well written, I breezed through this book. My only problem I found is it ended too soon. I'll certainly be looking forward to the next book in the series by this talented author!

Jon Michaelsen has written a superb novel in “Pretty Boy Dead.” I am a confirmed devotee of the detective genre and have read numerous books recently—none, however, of this high quality. While Michaelsen’s Detective Kendall Parker is gay, the latest in his series should appeal to all mystery readers, regardless of their own sexual orientation. Parker struggles with his own sexuality but readers looking for lurid particulars related to coupling will have to turn elsewhere. The novel is set in Atlanta. The author is very familiar both with the city and the APD by whom Parker is employed. The plot is not simplistic and the reader will be fascinated as the mystery of multiple suspicious deaths is resolved. I recommend this book without reservation.

Gritty grim at times hard to read but definitely worth the price. I liked Kendall but there were few truly likeable characters and the whodunnit was a winding trail, at times hard to follow. This isn't one of those alpha detective romance but a truly interesting mystery that capture the readers attention and keeps you interested until the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed PRETTY BOY DEAD, featuring tough-as-nails homicide cop Kendall Parker, whose stoic outer-shell hides a man with a lot of heart. The author's research comes across in his authentic depiction of police work and the procedural aspects of the story are especially impressive. The descriptions of modern-day Atlanta are so vivid I felt like I'd been there. Jon Michelsen is an excellent wordsmith, and the quality of his writing makes it hard to believe this is his first novel. I've read quite a lot of mysteries and it's hard to fool me, but I have to admit the clever surprise at the end did just that. Very well done.

I was engaged by this book from the first page. There's an attention to detail that makes it clear the author does his homework and then some. I liked the character of Kendal Parker a lot and was engrossed by the descriptions and insights into both the characters and their environment. It all felt very real, an excellent read.

I enjoyed this book and am looking for the next in this series. It was entertaining and well written. A quick enjoyable read.
