#5,884 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author, Dwight Howling, has written and extremely good mystery, which takes place in a locale that I have some personal experience and was the deciding factor in why I chose to purchase and read this book (normally as the author was someone I had never read before, I would have skipped it as it was not offered as a Kindle-Unlimited selection). That said, I’m certainly glad that purchased it as it was definitely worth it! I did however only award it 4-Stars as there were some “carry-over” editing issues. (5-Stars is reserved for “Overall Perfection”. Granted there were very few, however there were enough to knock off a star. This is definitely a mystery. It is not filled with action, though there is a great deal of it, and it does not depend upon “action scenes” to carry the storyline, that is carried forward from scene to scene, by an excellent overall plot, great characterization, and a writing style that many other authors may envy.I liked the protagonist “Nick Drake” and I was able to identify with his “issues” to a great extent though his fight against his addiction to heroin, his own personal “demon”, is not one of them, though the root of its cause…I’ll just say that I too understand “walking with the dead”.Even though I only gave this 4 Stars I do HIGHLY Recommend it. I will also be looking forward to the second book in the Nick Drake Series. Hopefully it will not be a long wait, but in the mean time I believe I’ll try another of Mr. Holing’s offerings.

In this well-crafted story, Nick Drake tries to solve, with the assistance of a crusty, and colorful deputy, Pudge, the disappearance and murder of several young women while Drake fights his own personal demons from a war halfway around the world. In a style that might remind one of James Lee Burke, Dwight Holing weaves a story of intrigue and drama underpinned by Native American mysticism and Drake’s struggle to overcome PTSD. Drake is a very interesting and complex character that drives the story through flashbacks to Vietnam around the time of the Tet Offensive and his current job as a conservation officer. This page-turner will keep you guessing and riveted to the end.Jeffrey Miller, Bureau 39

The descriptions of an area I'm unfamiliar with is what kept me going, in spite of more than a few character tropes and obvious plot manipulations. It's as if the author started with the typical set of cardboard cutouts and then tried to give each one enough detail to lift it above the mold it was taken from. Unfortunately, these superficial trappings could not hide the bones. I did enjoy a few of the traits of the main character and handling of his struggles. I did not enjoy being hit over the head with Vietnam PTSD. These are issues that could be addressed with a bit more subtlety. Also, yes there are a few editing issues: not typos but bits and pieces of plot and/or dialogue out of order. In the end, I read the entire book and would probably try another one if the author chooses to continue as a series.

Nick Drake is wonderfully complex character and I was invested in this story from the very first page. His backstory in Vietnam is beautifully (and horrifically) described. It was all very visceral and real, layered and emotional. I’m a huge fan of westerns and this felt very much like acontemporary western married with a mystery. I love the setting and time period. Eastern Oregon in 1968. It was a time of incredible turmoil and change and the story vividly reflects all of it. The dialogue crackles with wit and honesty and the action scenes are beautifully written and really exciting. If you’re looking for a smart, thrilling, beautifully written pager-turner, look no further. I can't wait for book two.

Main character Nick Drake is in a place that's been in the news a lot the last few years, that area of the North American northwest that includes Malheur wildlife refuge. Drake is a veteran, working at the kind of job people seem to take when they either don't like or can't handle people. He's way out in the middle of no where (No Mountain, actual name) and is asked to help a sheriff's deputy investigate a missing persons report.Drake is methodical, digging into things as a part of his normal job, a wildlife agent who tries to educate ranchers about some sort of restricted area where cattle are not supposed to be. Which is pretty much impossible because there are no fences dividing the "OK to graze" area from the "no cattle" area. But his work gives him a chance to personally meet everyone who lives out there. And he has a knack for finding bodies, a handy skill for someone who is looking to locate a missing woman. The book's other characters are not what you'd expect from a western police procedural. There's religious nuts, shysters, messed up rich kids, messed up poor kids, surprisingly feminist women, a few who seem to have a gift for second sight or clairvoyance or deep spirituality (the sort of traits that make you glad this is marked book 1, because you like them or dislike them well enough to hope you get to read more about them in another book). The country politics is believable, and I had read a lot before I realized this was a story set in the sixties. It could have been now, the themes were that universal. I like how the whole thing came together, but not in a neat little package. All the loose ends didn't exactly come together, which is a nice touch because even if a killer seems to be caught, well, sometimes its more that police and prosecutors get someone that they think they can convict, right? The cool vehicles, interesting information about cows, and a touch of humor in some of the situations between Drake and a local vet, Gemma, were a plus to me. I got the kindle edition, from Amazon. Whereever you get this book, if you like police procedurals, rural noir, western fiction, you might like this novel.
