After reading the first book, I worried about two things coming into reading this book. First was considering there are 3 love interests (plus 1 stalker) for Roselle, I was concerned that the attention needed for each romance would be spread unevenly. Second was how to work out various factions helping Roselle without it seeming like she has all the advantages thus the enemy looking weak in comparison.Well I'm happy to note that my worries were all unfounded! All the love interests had their strong moments in this book with Roselle and Amy A. Bartol made it believable for each of them to have a chance at a happy ending with her. Personally I am rooting for Reykin but I'll be happy with Roselle getting with any of them in the end. (Except for the stalker Crow...go away Crow!)As for my notion that Roselle having too many overpowered allies that make her success inevitable...the ending pretty much destroyed that thought. I'm not spoiling that so just read and you'll know what I'm talking about. This book is awesome! READ AND ENJOY!
Traitor Born picks up where Secondborn left off. Roselle is always true to herself, but because of her position as a secondborn and the family she is a part of, there's a lot of conflict and controversy regarding her existence. She has a pure heart with deep compassion, but she's seen a lot of bloodshed and is an experienced fighter herself, so she's not naive to believe that there will be any type of peaceful reconciliation in the midst of war. And while she has a purpose and goal to achieve, she's discovering that other people from all sides have plans for her that involve betrayal, espionage and rise to power. Trust is a fragile thing and while there are those who will protect her at all costs, there's always an underlying motive and price to pay. It's like a complicated game of chess with players who all have competing interests. And sometimes blood relation isn't the only family, strong bonds can be formed with others as well. There were a lot of ways this story could have gone with all of the different characters and the dystopian atmosphere. So I was impressed and surprised with the events that did come to pass because it could've been predictable, but it wasn't. As for the romance aspect, Roselle has at least 3 guys who are all currently firstborn, (possibly a 4th if you count Crow in his creepy way), vying for her attention and while I know her heart is with one in particular, I am siding with the "heartless" one in this book who has been by her side as a solid friend, ally and protector. He didn't get a lot of page time in the first book but those interactions were important, yet I knew he'd play a significant role and he did not disappoint in this one. I felt so much more in their connection than with anyone else. I love Roselle as a heroine. She is brave, steadfast and poised. She thinks things through carefully and even when everyone is against her, she still has emotions that guide her. She's definitely born to be a leader and has the intelligence and skills to back it up. This book has action, deception, secrets and strong characters. The ending really came to a climax so I can't wait to see what's in store in Rebel Born.
Definitely a fun read, but there are some parts about the story that annoy me.Spoiler alert******Does every man have to fall for Roselle? Is it just me, or do the Secondborn Trials sound a lot like the Hunger Games?Roselle is an awesome heroine, but in this book it definitely felt like she had help appear a little too magically from the many men constantly around her. Her story as a secondborn isn't quite believable when she seems like she leads a life of astounding privilege and luxury compared to that of any other secondborn, and always has the resources of other firstborns at her beck and call. The parts that I did like included seeing her love for her brother and father, despite how she was raised. The scene at the party was epic. I really liked Balmora as a character, although I regret her storyline. The chemistry between Roselle and various characters is great, and I would LOVE for her to end up with Reykin. I thought the ending was pretty good as a cliffhanger, but I didn't like what happened to Dune because it felt a bit rushed given his incredible fighting prowess. All in all, it was very enjoyable, and I look forward to the third book next year.
