Not as comprehensive as I hoped, and does not contain photos of every single pattern. However there is a useful reference from pp 74-88 with the pattern numbers and a short description for many (but not all) of them. There is a section on date cyphers which duplicates what is already on the Royal Crown Derby website. Fortunately, this book does not obsess too much on those nasty figurines, and you can actually get some info on the regular plates.
I looked forward to receiving this book and was immediately disappointed when I skimmed the contents. I wanted an in-depth study of all the varieties of the japan patterns and the book fails here.The author might be the wrong person for the title. The Derby imari patterns seem to fall into two distinct camps; the collectors of paperweights and the collectors of the traditional wares. The two camps have hardly any comprehension of eachother, just as collectors of modern collectables and collectors of antiques find eachothers taste baffling. I have been at auctions where people have paid three figures for a Derby imari cup and saucer while walking out of the room when Derby imari paperweights were being sold. This is the perfect definition of the division of the two types of imari collector. I hate to labour the point but when it comes to paperweights and traditional items there is hardly any crossover between the two genres and any author unaware of this might not be suitable for Derby imari wares.The book only gets to the patterns on page twentynine after a superfluous history of porcelain manufacure and lists a dozen or so named patterns and about seventy five numbered patterns, mostly in two inch square pictures. There quite a few full pages with captions containing the words ' a group of items', one of the most unhelpful descriptions possible.I was expecting a definitive book on Royal Crown Derby Imari Wares and this is a pale imitation of my expectations.
