This title presents basic definitions for terms that can be found on the Professional Engineering (PE) Civil licensure exam. A dictionary can be brought to the test, and since this one is written with that in mind, it would be a good choice. Entries are succinct and include cross-references, where appropriate. The PE exam is important in engineering education, so this dictionary would be useful in libraries supporting civil and environmental engineering programs. --Jack OGorman

Review
A Dictionary of Civil, Water Resources & Environmental Engineering is a reference book created especially to help individuals trying to pass the Professional Engineering (PE) Civil licensure exam. It is designed to be brought to the exam, which allows the use of certain reference books, and is far more expansive than the typical review manual glossary. I bought this book as a resource for the April 2017 PE exam and it didn't help at all. Luckily there were no confusing terms on the exam, but just skimming through this book you can tell the author threw in random words as filler, while omitting some very obvious water resources terms. For example, why is "weather","partly sunny" or "dawn" included in this dictionary, while terms such as "soffit" or "daylighting" (and this is just a few of many random, common words I could not find) are omitted? In summary, I don't recommend this book... either as a resource for your exam or at your job.
If you are taking the PE Civil-Water Resources exam, you need this book! The people that make the test (evil NCEES) know what is in your Lindeburg book, so they aren't going to give you freebie questions directly from that resource. I got a few answers right out of this book for the October 2015 exam, none of those answers were in the Lindeburg nor the Goswami books. This book was only around $50, in the grand scheme of it, you've already invested so much time and paid so much, why not spend just a little bit more? One question is worth $50 to me, IMO. You can be frugal in any other part of your life, but this book is essential for passing that exam. I swear by it.The book is definitely a dictionary format, no sample questions as someone reviewing earlier said. It clearly says dictionary and doesn't try to be anything else. It is well organized in alphabetical order and has so much in it. I spent the last week before the exam just skimming through this book. I learned a bunch of new terms that I had never seen before. It is a nice hardcover, solid sized book. Yes, you're going to be carrying a lot of stuff into your exam, but don't skimp on this.I personally took the Test Masters review class (in Texas, not sure if it is offered elsewhere in the country) and I took their binder and broke it into subjects and made new binders: Water/Wastewater/Hydrology, Geotech, Structures, Hydraulics, Transport/Engineering Econ. From there, I had someone's School of PE notes, and I put them in my binders as well. I took a Geotech textbook from college into the exam that helped me answer at least 3 problems straight from the text. I also had a Hydrology and Environmental book from college that easily got me 8 questions in the afternoon exam. I brought the Goswami and Lindeburg references and maybe got 2 questions of those as well. It all sounds like a lot, and it was annoying to cart around, but taking an 8 hour exam sucks regardless. This book helped with both the morning and the afternoon. Even if the definition you're looking for doesn't give you the answer, it will put you on a better path to finding the answer in one of your other books/notes.Oh, and I just found out that I passed! I got an 86%! I'm glad I NEVER have to do that again.
Son bought this for his PE exam. Book is okay but was more there as a resource - didn't really need to use it.
I took the PE exam for the first time last October, many years after graduation, and came up short. Fortunately, when I took the exam for the second time in April I purchased Dr. Friebel's Dictionary of Civil, Water Resources & Environmental Engineering which proved to be extremely helpful, I passed! The dictionary provided quick access to at least 4 or 5 problems, both AM and PM variety. I strongly urge anyone taking the Water Resources depth exam to add this book to your arsenal. Ultimately, I passed using only the CERM, Metcalf & Eddy, and Dr. Friebel's dictionary.
I bought this for the PE Exam in October, thinking it would be a good value if it even helped me get one more question correct than I would normally. Unfortunately, it was nearly useless on the version of the exam that I took. Of course, the exam changes forms with each iteration, so it may be more useful for you than it was for me, especially if you are taking a more environmentally focused exam module. I do wish that the dictionary was tabbed or had colored letter indicators on the side of it to aid in looking up words. In all, it could be easier to use, but likely will suit your purposes for the exam.
I was skeptical when told to purchase this for studying the PE exam but have been pleasantly surprised with how handy it's come in already. It's a great reference and though I was originally planning to sell it back after my exam, I will keep it. I'm happy to have a quick reference at my desk for Civil Engineering.
I had 2 dictionaries for the P.E. exam before learning of Dr. Friebel's WRE dictionary. Neither had much in the way of water resources or environmental. I purchased a copy here (fast service) after taking a class from Dr. Friebel on the hunch that if he put the same effort into the book I wouldn't be disappointed. A scan across all 3 quickly showed that it is very expansive regarding environmental terms and very different from the typical civil dictionary. I used it for a few practice exams but didn't need it for the April 13 Civil/Transportation exam. Lucky I guess. I do know some people who did use it for the exam and scored a few points they wouldn't have. I rank it between a must have and cheap insurance. You won't find a better WRE dictionary near this cost. Buy it for the exam and when you pass take it to work.
Decent for the PE exam.
