Monster, Perfect Edition, Volume 4 starts off on a tangent, a private investigator named Richard is trying to rebuild his life and reconstruct the cases that he never solved. At the center of those cases is Johan Liebert, who is the personal assistant to the banking magnate, Herr Schuwald. Dr. Tenma is getting closer to this Johan - who he believes to be the Johan who committed the crimes for which Dr. Tenma is a wanted man - and the good doctor plans on killing him.Naoki Urasawa should be mandatory reading for anyone who is serious about comic books. His work is contemporary, bold, long-running, and engaging. Having read basically eight tankÅbon volumes of both Monster and 20th Century Boys, I have to say that so far, Monster is a little more linear and a lot less digressive. There are tangential stories in Monster, but they lead back to the main story. The pace continues throughout the series, and it always comes back to the main duo of Johan and Dr. Tenma.Johan and Dr. Tenma are two sides of the same coin. They are both driven, bent on bringing their plans to fruition, dark, and cunning. Johan is the archtypical sociopath. He is as at ease wooing captains of industry as he is controlling children, murderers, and college students. Dr. Tenma, in his own way, is becoming Johan. Is this what Johan has had planned all along? Will Dr. Tenma play some role in Johan's plot? ****3/4

Masterpiece!

Fantastic!
Well, I didn’t expect this, but my new favorite character is the guy that looks like Wilford Brimley with an even bigger mustache. Whether he is in a fight scene or a conversation his eyebrows never seem to relax! I suspect that character is as fun to draw as he is to look at.It’s still amazing to me that a comic like this, which mainly consists of people talking, can be as compelling as this is. As it moves along I am continually astounded as to how expertly the various characters and plot threads are interweaving. This series is a master class in how to tell a story. Every once and a while it seems like the plot involving Tenma and Johan is about to draw to a close, but then it doesn’t. How can he sustain this for five more volumes? I’m a little afraid Tenma will come to a bad end, but I can’t wait to find out.
Purchased at Rightstuf:This omnibus of Monster 4 contains 412 pages, chapters 51 to 68, and unlike my 3rd omnibus, is not an orangey color. It matches the rest of the books, although the spine stands out since the upper right green frame (that you can see in the picture) wraps around the spine of the book. It is a stark difference compared to the other books and might throw you off since they don't match but it still looks nice together. This omnibus contains many stories that actually further the plot, and we finally get to see Johan in action. We get to see how he kills his victims and while he himself doesn't raise a hand against them, it is beyond terrifying to see how in control he is, how right he is that his victim will not survive. We begin with a man named Richard who is divorced and wishes to see his daughter, Rose Mary. His wife divorced him due to many reasons, one being his drinking problems and another being that he killed someone on duty. But from what we know, he had no other choice at the time and had to kill the criminal. In order to see his daughter, Richard fights his alcohol addiction and sees a psychiatrist to help him recover. As this story continues, we watch as Richard comes to terms with something in his past he would much rather forget, and Johan comes up to help him bring out those demons. I won't spoil anything, but what I can tell you is that this is the closest any of the characters have ever been to realizing who has been murdering everyone. In fact, one of the characters realizes that Johan Liebert has killed all of these people, and has done so in such a way that he would never be suspected. And this character realizes that Tenma is innocent! But of course, Johan knows all and sees all.We get to see Nina once again, and Johan literally has a panic attack in one of the chapters and finally shows some kind of humanity. That chapter was especially disturbing to read, seeing how a detached, cold killer as himself reacts. If you were waiting for the plot to get intense, to see why Johan is such a terrifyingly realistic villain, THIS is where it all goes down.
The fourth volume of Monster by Naoki Urasawa is to me an example of the best way to right filler material possible. The story picks up just where it left off, where we finally get to see Johan in action after a long absense. After a few issues, Tenma begins preparations to confront Johan head on. On the bad side, the actual confrontation is forcefully pushed off until the fifth volume. Thankfully Urasawa made up for it.This book explores almost every still-living character in the manga. Tenma, Nina, Dieter, Lunge, and some new faces are all here. Plus, thanks to Johan being very much in the picture, we are treated to some of the best psychological horror the series has yet offered. Suffice to say, I think this is the best Monster collection to date.
