I'm not here to recap the book, you can find that elsewhere. I'm here to tell you why you should invest your spare time reading this series. If you've read my review of book one you can skip ahead because I don't really have anything new to say, just want the author to have some honest reviews in return for his hard work putting pen to paper.I read a lot of post-apocalypse fiction. Most writers suck at it. Their scenarios are rather far fetched, their characters are cookie cutter preppers I could never relate to if we were face to face, and the decisions their characters make are so stupid as to put them in deeper jeopardy making their professed prepper status highly questionable and making me hope Darwin got it right so I'll never have to deal with them.A.A.'s characters are well developed, thinking people, even the bad guys. They behave in ways that are true to their back story. Yes, they make mistakes and sometimes those mistakes have unpleasant consequences. As of today, there are maybe 10 or more books in the series. They enter my library as soon as they are released and that's unusual for me because my experience is that when an author pens a series beyond a certain number of books, they seem to reach a point where they're either phoning it in to continue milking the cash cow, or they get so tired of the characters and storyline that they begin to hate what they perceive as a rut. Neither pitfall traps this series. The story arc is such that the plot could run on for another 10 books or more provided the author continues to keep events believable. The characters are not one-note survivalists. They continue to mature and evolve as events unfold. The author isn't afraid to kill off a key character or two and new characters are fleshed out just as well as the ones that survive through everything. In spite of the seriousness of the subject, the author isn't afraid of some comic relief and there are genuine belly laughs spread throughout the series. So far, I've only been mildly disappointed with one book in the series and I believe that's because Weatherman bowed to fan pressure and turned a book out before he should have. If you pick up this series, you'll know which one I'm referring to and I'm sure he does too. When a writer is as social media connected to their fan base as he is, and that base is screaming for the next book, that's hard to ignore but easy to forgive.I hope one day to write this well and have my fans clamoring for the next book.
A. American has written these books that make you wake up and take notice, the characters become family you feel their pain, you share in their victories and losses, you mourn their deaths like you have lost a life long friend...I highly recommend these books they make you think outside the box and prompt you to think of the what if scenarios..One thing I love about these books is it is an awesome resource for helping non-preppers to see what might happen in a shtf situation some people just can't imagine all the horrible things that probably will happen. Hand them book 1 in this series and welcome them to the club..
The fourth installment seems to have really picked up with the author breathing new life into the series. The familiar characters feel more flushed out and the dangerous situations might be a bit implausible, but I didn't really care. The infiltration of the camp was a fantastic idea that hooked me through to the end. While not perfect, I will certainly be picking up the next title and continuing the journey with the characters, who, by now, feel like friends of mine. There are so many stories in this new world that A. American has built, the possibility is nearly endless. I can't wait!
I don't read this series for the characters. I read it for the story. The characters are...somewhat one dimensional except the main one. I haven't quite decided (even after reading the first four and getting into book five) what I think about him. I am kinda just reading the series to see just what the US would be like if the grid went down which is a very real possibility because of the mess of our infrastructure and deregulation of the power companies years ago. There really is no plan in place for the grid going down...other than hoping that it doesn't. This so far has been a fun series that I will continue to read as long as the big publishers do not jack the prices up. Paying three dollars for a kindle book is nice. Paying more than that is...not all that enticing especially when the big publishers only release a book a year and indies release two to four usually.
I didn't think this book was quite as good as the others in the series. I felt like the author had lost interest in the people and the story. Some things were inaccurate such as mixing up some tortilla "batter" which I suppose he meant dough. He cooked them in a greased skillet ... if you know about cooking tortillas you don't use grease, you use a dry cast iron skillet or comal. I have to wonder what his and the other wives did all day because the cooking was done by the men, the cleaning was done by the men and they even made the soap, instructed the women in how to use a rag instead of toilet paper etc. It just doesn't seem right that a man who knows everything about survival would have a wife so helpless. But I liked the series a lot even if there were a lot lucky incidences of having food stored and neighbors who had prepared etc. I do notice a lot of these types of story's include a lot of lucky things like a bottomless pit of money or preps or weapons etc. They don't usually include normal people who never figured on something happening. (Like the story One Second After) There was some great instruction in the story and anyone who is a serious prepper would appreciate that part of the story. It would be interesting to see where this story heads, I wish the author would do one more with more zeal and more participation from the girls.
