Review

J. William Worden, PhD, ABPP "The Fourth Edition of this book retains all the theoretical strengths and clinical wisdom of past editions, while incorporating emerging theories and cutting-edge research. It is required reading for any counselor, educator, or researcher who wishes to understand grief." -- Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, Professor, The Graduate School, The College of New Rochelle, Senior Consultant, The Hospice Foundation of America "I can't think of a thing Worden has missed." -- Stephen Fleming, PhD, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health, York University Toronto, Ontario Canada "[If] you knew Worden's work and his writings previously, you'll find an enhanced book with a much broader and challenging perspective than his previous editions. If you are not familiar with Bill Worden, then it is time to begin." -- Ben Wolfe, MEd, LICSW, Fellow in Thanatology, Program Manager/Grief Counselor, St. Mary's Medical Center's Grief Support Center Duluth, MN, Past President, Association for Death Education and Counseling "For any hospice or therapist working with the bereaved, Grief counseling and grief therapy is an essential part of your library. Once again Worden has demonstrated the important distinction between counseling and therapy for the bereaved." --Stephen R. Connor, PhD, Vice President for Research and International Development, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization Praise for the Previous Edition: "This book is the 'Bible' for those involved in the field of bereavement work...It is a straightforward, tightly focused, practical, soundly reasoned, compact working text." -- William M. Lamers Jr., MD, The Lamers Medical Group "There are many yardsticks by which we find a person to be a “giant.” In the fields of death education, research and counseling/psychology, surely Bill Worden is a giant....His four volumes span some 20 years. Each volume keeps the solid essentials that never really change, but get some buffing and polishing....Worden demands that we stay current and will not tolerate anything that hints of second best. The foundations stay, but the substance continues to evolve. So, with volume four we have a handy, well-stated review....ALL of us, personally and professionally, are indebted to J. William Worden. From his work we may be just a bit wiser, a bit healthier, a bit more competent, and a lot more in touch with meaning (our own and those of others) for the sake of all who mourn." Richard B. Gilbert, PhD, CT, (D)AAETS Faculty, Mercy College, New York Faculty, Benedictine University of Illinois

While I found this text to be quiet informative I also found it to be rather judgmental and generalizing at times. For example, when talking about socially negated loss the author states "many single young women who get pregnant choose to terminate the pregnancy. One problem here is that the decision is often made in isolation-the man often is not told about the pregnancy..." Yet Worden does not cite the source of such generalized information. Additionally, Worden argues that that Admitting positive feelings [towards the deceased] is a necessary part of the process of achieving an adequate and healthy resolution to one's grief. I'm not sure I agree. I have worked with clients who's parents did nothing short of torture them in childhood and they did not have any positive feelings towards them. However they were able to successfully move and work through both their trauma and grief.

This book was easy to read, and it explained the current state (at least in 2009) of grief counseling and grief therapy. There is actually a newer edition, the 5th edition, which came out in 2018 a couple months after I bought this book. This book would have been better if there were reprints of various screening tools, and perhaps clinical cases where a grief counselor missed the mark in terms of understanding a patient's grief, or at least case descriptions of challenging cases, though maybe with privacy laws this would be hard to obtain consent for. I feel like I gained at least an introduction and understanding of the sort of work that grief therapist and counselors do.A section on dealing with difficult issues on a hospice inpatient unit might have been helpful, though that is sort of outside of the topic of grief therapy and counseling.

I would love to, if it weren't so personal. My husband passed away on March 3 of this year so I'm dealing with grieving. My counselor recommended this book, and frankly, when I saw the subtitle, "Handbook for Practitioners" (of psychotherapy), I almost returned it, until I took about five minutes to discover how very readable and helpful it is. Like my counselor, I find Dr. Worden's Task Therapy very practical and accessible to the non-specialist reader. I just ordered a gift copy for a friend, who lost her husband a matter of days after my husband's death. It's a blessing, truly.

I was not enjoying this book when I started reading it, however as I went along it got better. It is full of techniques and varying scenarios making it quite encompassing. A very informative read.

As a budding school counselor, this proved to be a great resource and reference to use while working with a high-risk demographic.

Best book on treating people who are struggling with managing grief that I have ever read. It is organized in a way that allows you to quickly implement effective strategies when working with bereavement. Every counselor should have a copy of this book in their library.

This book is VERY helpful for people who are embarking on grief therapy without previous experience. While it doesn't list specific techniques, it assists you as a clinician to put into perspective where the client may be on their journey, and gives you the thought processes you need to best assist your client. It's also easy to read. I bought this not for a class, but to expand my own knowledge, and have found it immensely helpful.

If anyone needs a concise, go-to resource for ministering to others, especially those who are grieving, this is it. Worden is thorough without being pedantic. He sets forth his tasks of mourning, and mediators of grieving, which make so much more sense than the long-misused Kubler-Ross stages of grief. (No disrespect intended, her work was groundbreaking in caring for the dying). Great book.
