The jacket illustration offers a bird’s-eye view of the pond, hill, playground, and flower beds, areas that will be seen again and again from different angles. Around six o’clock in the morning, several dogs and their people head for the pond. By seven, two babies and their grown-ups have arrived at the playground. Hour by hour throughout the day, visitors come and go. In the crowded playground at ten o’clock, a sprinkler in a shallow pool amuses toddlers, while older kids line up at the drinking fountain for water to fill their water balloons, to wet the sand for sand castles, and to cool the slide. While the quiet text creates a satisfying, structured narrative full of details that will intrigue young children, they will also be engaged by the inviting pictures. Using digitally assembled pencil drawings and ink washes, Graegin creates illustrations with a traditional look and plenty of human interest. The park within the book becomes a destination that a child can visit and revisit, noticing new details each time and connecting familiar ones in new ways. My daughter (2 years old) and I love this book. She often picks it from the book shelf herself. There is so much for her to look at in the beautiful illustrations. I highly recommend it!!
I bought this book for my 2-year-old son. We have a challenging time finding books with characters and settings that he can relate to; most books have talking cars or driving fish. For variety we are also always on the lookout for books that are not about trucks or trains or other modes of transportation.This is a beautifully written and illustrated book about something as simple and relatable as summer days at the park. My son loves it and we have read it every day at least once a day for the last month.If you are looking for fantasy, this book is not for you.
My 4-year-old loves this book, and so do I. A great concept, fun writing, beautifully executed. The drawings are so cute and richly detailed, there so much to look at! I love fun books about real things that are interesting for adults as well as kids.
Beautifully written and so many wonderful details in the illustrations.
The prose (there's no plot) is so gentle and sweet--it provides a lot to talk about, and it doesn't tell you how you should think or feel about anything. (After we read a book through a few times, we then read it more slowly and talk about the words and pictures.) The artwork is simple but very good, with lots of detail to find and consider. Overall, though, it's just sweet and mellow and unassuming. We love it.
This is an easy read with fun pictures for kids to study, and perfect for those who love NYC in the summer!
Gave this to a child who goes to the parks in NYCThe parents told me he likes it a lot.
Somewhat crowded pictures, of course that is a matter of taste. Bad pictures of babies. My son kept on asking why do they have faces like that?
